Don't Get Stung: How Billy Mate Is Fighting Counterfeit Products

As Billy Mate grows, more products imitate the real thing. Here is how we help you verify, register and prove your Billy Mate is genuine.
As Billy Mate grows, we are seeing more products that imitate the look, branding and presentation of genuine Billy Mate and Got-Yaa products. Some copies are obvious. Others can look convincing enough to fool a customer at first glance.
That is why we are building a stronger authenticity system across the Billy Mate range, from Got-Yaa Filters and everyday accessories through to Billy Mate bongs, premium glassware and limited editions. When you buy Billy Mate, you should be able to verify it, register it and know that it is genuine.
Why counterfeit products matter
Counterfeiting is about much more than someone copying a logo. A fake may look similar in a photograph while being made from completely different materials, to different specifications and with little or no quality control. With a counterfeit product you may have no reliable way of knowing:
- What materials have been used
- Whether the stated specifications are accurate
- Whether the glass thickness is what was advertised
- Whether glass joints and replacement parts are correctly sized
- What filtration material is actually inside a filter
- Whether the product was made to consistent quality standards
- Whether the seller will still be there if something goes wrong
A customer can pay for what they believe is a genuine Billy Mate product and end up with something we did not manufacture, supply, approve or stand behind.
Got-Yaa Filters are one of the products we take particularly seriously, because the filtration material is part of the product's function. A counterfeit filter can copy the shape, packaging and branding while using completely different materials inside.
That is why genuine Got-Yaa Filters carry our distinctive holographic authenticity seal. The round seal features Billy Mate artwork in the centre together with Got-Yaa branding and security details. Moved under light or viewed from different angles, its holographic surface shifts through gold, green, yellow, orange, and blue and turquoise tones.
What to look for
- The round holographic authenticity seal
- Billy Mate artwork in the centre
- Got-Yaa branding built into the hologram
- A genuine metallic, reflective finish
- Colour changes as the viewing angle changes
- Clean, detailed printing and construction
The hologram is an important feature, but do not judge it in isolation. Packaging, product construction and the seller should also look consistent with genuine Got-Yaa products.

Activated Carbon and Corn Fiber Got-Yaa Filters
Authenticity matters across both major Got-Yaa filter styles. Customers choose Activated Carbon filters for their carbon filtration, and Corn Fiber filters for their specific material and experience. A copy that looks similar on the outside may not use the same construction or filtration material, so we encourage customers to buy from Billy Mate and recognised sellers.
We have started introducing unique serial numbers on new Billy Mate products, including bongs and selected accessories. Rather than relying only on a logo or packaging, an individual Billy Mate product can now have its own identity within our system.
Verify your Billy Mate
Customers with a supported product can enter the serial number into the Billy Mate Authenticity Checker. The system confirms whether that serial number is recognised and associated with a genuine Billy Mate product, and depending on the product can show authenticity and product details.
Register your product in your name
Verification is only the beginning. Owners can register supported products under their own name, creating an ownership record connected to the individual product and its serial number. Registration helps you confirm a product is genuine, connect it to your Billy Mate account, keep a record of what you own, identify numbered limited editions, and maintain a clearer ownership history.
Selling or gifting it? Transfer the ownership
Billy Mate products do not always stay with the first owner. A bong may be sold, a limited edition traded, a product given as a gift. Where supported, the registration can move with the physical product. In the second-hand market, a future buyer can have greater confidence that the product matches a genuine Billy Mate serial record, and ownership can then transfer to them.
One product. One serial. One ownership record.
For supported products: verify it, register it, own it, transfer it. The serial gives the physical product an identity, the authenticity system connects that identity to Billy Mate, registration connects the product with its owner, and if it changes hands the ownership record can change with it. That is a much stronger system than simply putting a logo on a piece of glass.
Particularly important for limited editions
Serial numbers become even more valuable with Billy Mate limited editions and collectibles. If a product is released as 127 of 500, that number is part of its identity. Registering it links the physical item, its serial information and its owner, and if it is sold or traded, ownership can transfer rather than losing the connection. For collectors, that adds real confidence when buying from someone other than the original retailer.
Glassware is another area where appearance alone can mislead. A counterfeit bong might resemble a Billy Mate product while being very different once inspected. Differences can include:
- Thinner glass
- Incorrect joint sizing
- Poor welds and weak bases
- Incorrect diffusers
- Different glass composition
- Poorly fitted accessories, cone pieces or stems
- Low-quality printing and copied or inaccurate branding
Two products can look remarkably similar in an online photo and still be very different. Billy Mate glassware is developed around particular specifications; copying the appearance does not make something a Billy Mate product.
Counterfeiting can affect the whole range
The problem is not limited to filters and bongs. Brand imitation can affect Got-Yaa Filters, bongs, glass stems, cone pieces, ash catchers, mouthpiece filtration, cleaning products, storage accessories, limited editions, branded accessories, replacement components and merchandise. That is why our authenticity program is being built across the brand, not around a single product.
No single sticker solves counterfeiting, so Billy Mate is building several layers of protection: holographic security on Got-Yaa Filters, unique serial numbers on new Billy Mate products, online verification, product registration, ownership transfer, limited-edition identification, and controlled distribution through Billy Mate and recognised retailers. Together they make it increasingly difficult for a fake to pass itself off as genuine.
If you are buying, particularly from a seller you do not know, take a few minutes to check it.
- Check the seller. Know who you are buying from. A dramatically low price should make you look more closely.
- Check the branding. Watch for poor printing, incorrect spelling, unusual fonts or logos that do not match.
- Check the specifications. Compare dimensions, glass thickness, joint sizes and included accessories with the official product information.
- Look for authenticity features. A holographic seal, a unique serial number, a numbered limited-edition marking, product-specific packaging, and online serial verification.
- Verify the serial number. If the product carries one, use the Billy Mate authenticity checker.
Buying second-hand
If a seller claims a pre-owned product is genuine and it carries a supported serial number, ask about the registration. Where applicable, it can be verified and ownership transferred to you, giving a genuine Billy Mate something a fake cannot easily reproduce: a recognised identity within the Billy Mate system.
If you are uncertain about a product, contact us. Send clear photos of the product and packaging, a photo of the holographic seal if applicable, the serial number, where it was purchased, the seller's details or listing, and purchase information if available. We would rather help you check a product before you get stung by a fake.
Think you found a counterfeit?
If you believe someone is selling counterfeit Billy Mate or Got-Yaa products, we want to know. Details such as the seller name, website, marketplace listing, photos and product details help us find where questionable products are appearing, and reporting it may protect the next customer.
We are not interested in putting a logo on something and calling the job finished. We want genuine Billy Mate products to be easy to recognise, verify and register, and our authenticity system will keep developing as the range grows. Because when you pay for Billy Mate, you should receive Billy Mate. Not something that looks close. Not an imitation. Not a knock-off.
REAL MATES. NO FAKES. Verify it. Register it. Own it. Look for the seal. Check the serial. Know it is Billy Mate.
